BASEsounds The Carnival Mix DJ Sky

BASE Sounds – 001 The Carnival Mix

By DJ SKY

For our first playlist and in honour of Notting Hill Carnival which is cancelled in IRL this year due to the (Coronavirus) pandemic, but is being celebrated digitally, we have enlisted the help of Safiya Yekwai to create an expertly curated tracklist of much needed good vibes for you to enjoy at home during the bank holiday weekend. Safiya, also known as DJ SKY, is a Fashion Stylist, Co-Founder of Atijo an online vintage and secondhand store and a London based DJ. This mix as Safiya explains in our interview “showcases the best of the Caribbean island, the roots of carnival and a mix of Basement and Soca”.

Can you tell us the meaning or how you came up with DJ Sky?

Sky is actually my initials, my older sister named me and purposely worked it to have that as the acronym. When I was thinking of DJ names, it felt the most authentic to me, it is me, it’s me also affirming to reach for the sky in all that I do.

What is your favourite genre of music era?

I think Grime is one of my all-time favourites. I think it’s because it reminds me of my youth, of growing up and the era when I first started raving. I remember playing Dizzee Rascal’s Boy In Da Corner album on repeat. I also love the energy the music brings and how authentically London it is.

What is your favourite music era?

My favourite era I’d say has to be the 90s I think that was a great time for Black Music and Female artist in particular. People like Missy Elliott, Lil Kim, Aaliyah and TLC all came up in the 90s and I feel they’ve all been so influential to this day!

Can you tell us a little bit about why you selected the tracks in your mix?

I wanted to showcase the best of the Caribbean island, the roots of carnival and a mix of Basement and Soca.

What do you hope people will get from listening to this mix?

I want people to feel like they are at carnival! sun shining, rums flowing, the smell of jerk chicken in the background and you just vibing and having a good time with your people!

What song do you always play to get you ready for a night out and why?

Pop Smoke Welcome To The Party, Juvenile Back That Azz Up and now that would be followed by WAP. I don’t know what else you’d need to get hyped for a good night out!

What is your favourite music related beauty moment?

Aaliyah Rock the Boat video, she had too many stand out beauty looks that still feel so modern today. From her perfect thick bushy brows and dewy skin in the first scenes to the dramatic red colour pop eye look and the diamante on the end of her bottom lashes. It’s those subtle details that make her make-up looks so effortless but dramatic at the same time. Also, in We Need A Resolution the smokey eye and gloss red lip is a moment!

What are your must have beauty and hair products to get you through the night when you’re DJ’ing at an event?

My hair is natural and most of the time it will be out or in braids so a good hair gel is key! One that can lay my edges, Eco Styler and Gorilla Snot gel are my go to’s.  For the face you can’t go wrong with a great lip gloss and the Fenty lip glosses are fantastic, I love Fenty Glow, a great colour for my skin tone and shimmer helps the crowd see my lips when I’m singing along to the tunes!
